VECSEL consortium hits the show floor:
EU-funded project finds interest and
recognition at
CLEO 2008
At this year’s
Conference
on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) exhibition in San Jose, CA
(USA)
the NATAL
consortium (IST 016769) decided jointly to try a novel format to raise
international
awareness in combination with initial product demonstration activity.
Being in
its final year of research, all European partners of the NATAL consortium
contributed to the content
and format with a remarkable show presence.
In the laser community
CLEO is very well-known for its scientific excellence for more than 20
years (5,200 attendees from 43
different
countries), and combined with a
high class exhibition, it is not only of prime importance to the North
American
laser market, but also relevant on a global scale. In particular in the
even
years, when CLEO is held in the month May at the West Coast of the United States,
this event provides an important forum and interface between the more
fundamentally-oriented laser research community, front-runner
development
companies and early industrial adopters.
Flanked by direct
email invitations to interested parties before the show, the partners
of the
consortium presented their individual and joint project work efforts in
form of
direct contributions to the conference program, but in addition also
with a professionally
styled show booth, discussing openly current issues with conference and
show participants
right at the show floor. A lively exchange was held on the project
results in
the field of semiconductor laser developments and applications, but
also of
future marketing and productisation activities. To our knowledge
European
Community funded laser research was never seen in this format in the US
before and to
the opinion of the NATAL
consortium has helped to raise awareness of the quality but also of the
strong
support that photonics enjoys in Europe.
Interested researchers,
project coordinators or consortium members in the laser field are
encouraged to

NATAL results
have
been advertised in SPIE Newsroom. A review paper entitled “Dilute
nitrides tailor the wavelength of semiconductor disk
lasers”
has been published
online in SPIE Newsroom. The paper summarizes the breakthrough results
obtained
at the Optoelectronics Research Centre concerning the development of
visible
semiconductor disk lasers. SPIE Newsroom is a professional forum, which
ensure
a wide dissemination of the state-of-the-art research results in the
field of
photonics and related applications. For reading the paper, please follow the link .
